The Movies Have Seen Enough Smoke Blown into the Air Than Smoke Generated in a Year’s Worth of Wildfires It’s the 1940′s and you’re an actor playing a detective in a Film Noir while waiting the word from your director to start a scene where the cop will have a smoldering scene of interrogation with the femme fatale. As the director yells “action”–you contort your face into a Blue Steel shape, take a Camel out of its package, dangle it from your lower lip and give it a light in a stylized way with your equally stylized lighter. Yes, you’ve just managed to look cooler than cool and using one of the essentials of acting: Using your hands in some creative way to gain viewer interest. Plus, give yourself a…yeah, hand for not gagging and coughing because the entire movie studio is also clouded in smoke from the film crew. Such was the life of the movies back in the 1940′s, particularly, where you’d see more smoking in movies than probably any other decade. The silent-era 1920′s kicked it off and the 1950′s onward would have smoking in key scenes of legendary movies. But you can guarantee just about every film made in the 1940′s other than period pieces had at least a dozen scenes of someone smoking a cigarette and not worrying in the least if that cloud of smoke went right into the face of their fellow actors who were also equally addicted to lighting up a Camel every fifteen minutes. The most common genres seen in the 1940′s with smoking were generally romantic comedies, movies about WWII or detective Film Noirs that arrived later that decade. And all you need as proof for perhaps the most cigarette-addicted actress of that decade is seeing Bette Davis in 1942′s “Now Voyager.” The film has just about every scene with someone smoking, and if there was a subliminal pitch to sell cigarettes in the film, the scene where Davis accepts the second cigarette from co-star Paul Henreid’s mouth must have recruited millions of new smokers either in or not in the war at the time. And if not Bette Davis for the women, then for the men would have been Humphrey Bogart who was inarguably the male smoker extraordinaire.
